It can reduce the risk not just of dementia, but depression as well.<\/a> It improves balance, reduces the risk of falling, and even reduces the risk of developing certain cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, many seniors struggle to exercise at home. They might worry about falling, or they simply find it uninteresting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n But here\u2019s the good news: Exercising with others can make working out feel not just safer and more doable, but much more fun. And doing so in a senior-oriented program with a group has social benefits as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s no better place for elderly people to get moving in Alameda than the Mastick Senior Center<\/a>. The Center hosts a Volunteer Walking Group<\/a> that sets out every Monday morning from the Fruitvale BART Station<\/a>. It\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for your loved one to explore the Bay Area on foot with a group of fellow seniors. Just make sure they bring good walking shoes, some water and lunch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seniors in Alameda are deeply involved in the community, with many local nonprofits led partially or fully by seniors. In fact, the Mastick Senior Center, which we mentioned above, is run entirely by seniors, and they have a variety of volunteer opportunities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By volunteering at the Mastick Senior Center, your loved one can spend their time planning events and programs from day trips around the Bay Area to movie nights. Alameda College<\/a> has a wide variety of continuing education classes<\/a> in literature and fine arts. Many of their classes even have a hybrid setup, so your loved one can attend from the comfort of their home. And the best part is, every single class is completely free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alameda cares about its seniors, and it\u2019s host to a wide variety of organizations that help them. Chief among them is the Alameda Area Agency on Aging<\/a> (AAA), which provides a variety of services to help them access the services they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The AAA offers many forms of assistance, from Meals on Wheels programs to legal assistance. There\u2019s even a volunteer ombudsman program<\/a> to help seniors in long-term care facilities whose needs aren\u2019t being met. By investigating complaints and finding ways to resolve them, your loved one can get fellow elders the care they need and make a real difference in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bay Area has a long tradition of environmentalism, and Joyce Mercado<\/a> is at the forefront. After 35 years at IBM, Mercado retired and took up climate activism full-time. She wrote Save the Planet in Your Spare Time<\/em><\/a>, and she gives regular presentations<\/a> on climate protection all around the San Francisco area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mercado knows that real change starts at the local level. She writes a regular climate column in the Alameda Post<\/em><\/a>, and has created a climate checklist specifically for Alameda residents<\/a> to help them work with the community and do their part.
