People with Alzheimer\u2019s disease need to be active and do things they enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>However, don&#8217;t expect too much. It&#8217;s not easy for them to plan their days and do different tasks. \u00a0Here are two reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They may have trouble deciding what to do each day. This could make them fearful and worried, or quiet and withdrawn.<\/li>\n<li>They may have trouble starting tasks. Remember, the person is not being lazy. He or she might need help organizing the day or doing an activity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Help the person get started on an activity. Break the activity down into small steps and praise the person for each step he or she completes.\u00a0Simple activities often are best.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-olympia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2016\/04\/Walk-1.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"251\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-995\" \/>Exercise and Physical Activity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being active and getting exercise helps people with Alzheimer\u2019s disease feel better. Exercise helps keep their muscles, joints, and heart in good shape. It also helps people stay at a healthy weight and have regular toilet and sleep habits. You can exercise together to make it more fun.<\/p>\n<p>You want someone with Alzheimer\u2019s to do as much as possible for himself or herself. At the same time, you also need to make sure that the person is safe when active.\u00a0Here are some tips for helping the person with Alzheimer\u2019s stay active:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a walk together each day. Exercise is good for caregivers, too!<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the person with Alzheimer\u2019s has an ID bracelet with your phone number, if he or she walks alone.<\/li>\n<li>Check your local TV guide to see if there is a program to help older adults exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Add music to the exercises, if it helps the person with Alzheimer\u2019s. Dance to the music if possible.<\/li>\n<li>Watch exercise videos\/DVDs made for older people. Try exercising together.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure he or she wears comfortable clothes and shoes that fit well and are made for exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the person drinks water or juice after exercise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Healthy Eating<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eating healthy foods helps us stay well. It&#8217;s even more important for people with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u00a0Here are tips for healthy eating when a person with Alzheimer\u2019s lives with you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products. Be sure to buy foods that the person likes and can eat.<\/li>\n<li>Buy food that is easy to prepare, such as pre-made salads and single food portions.<\/li>\n<li>Have someone else make meals if possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are tips for healthy eating when a person with early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s lives alone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the steps above.<\/li>\n<li>Buy foods that the person doesn&#8217;t need to cook.<\/li>\n<li>Call to remind him or her to eat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the early stage of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, the person&#8217;s eating habits usually don&#8217;t change. When changes do occur, living alone may not be safe anymore.\u00a0Look for these signs to see if living alone is no longer safe for the person with Alzheimer\u2019s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The person forgets to eat.<\/li>\n<li>Food has burned because it was left on the stove.<\/li>\n<li>The oven isn&#8217;t turned off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Plan Enjoyable Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plan activities that the person with Alzheimer\u2019s enjoys. He or she can be a part of the activity or just watch.\u00a0Here are things you can do to help the person enjoy an activity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Match the activity with what the person with Alzheimer\u2019s can do.<\/li>\n<li>Choose activities that can be fun for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Help the person get started.<\/li>\n<li>Decide if he or she can do the activity alone or needs help.<\/li>\n<li>Watch to see if the person gets frustrated.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure he or she feels successful and has fun.<\/li>\n<li>Let him or her watch, if that is more enjoyable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The person with Alzheimer\u2019s can do different activities each day. This keeps the day interesting and fun. The following sections may give you some ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-olympia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2016\/04\/FL114-1-263x300.jpg\" alt=\"FL114-1\" width=\"225\" height=\"257\" class=\"alignright wp-image-999\" \/>Household Chores<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doing household chores can boost the person&#8217;s self-esteem. When the person helps you, don&#8217;t forget to say &#8220;thank you.&#8221; Some examples for them to do:\u00a0wash dishes, set the table, or prepare food;\u00a0sweep the floor;\u00a0polish shoes;\u00a0sort mail and clip coupons;\u00a0sort socks and fold laundry; or\u00a0sort recycling materials or other things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cooking and Baking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cooking and baking can bring the person with Alzheimer\u2019s a lot of joy. He or she might help\u00a0decide on what is needed to prepare the dish;\u00a0make the dish;\u00a0measure, mix, and pour;\u00a0tell someone else how to prepare a recipe\u00a0taste the food; or\u00a0watch others prepare food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music and Dancing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People with Alzheimer\u2019s may like music because it brings back happy memories and feelings. Some people feel the rhythm and may want to dance. Others enjoy listening to or talking about their favorite music. Even if the person with Alzheimer\u2019s has trouble finding the right words to speak, he or she still may be able to sing songs from the past.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following musical activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play CDs, tapes, or records.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about the music and the singer.<\/li>\n<li>Ask what he or she was doing when the song was popular.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about the music and past events.<\/li>\n<li>Sing or dance to well-known songs.<\/li>\n<li>Play musical games like &#8220;Name That Tune.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Attend a concert or musical program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many people with Alzheimer\u2019s enjoy pets, such as dogs, cats, or birds. Pets may help &#8220;bring them to life.&#8221; Pets also can help people feel more loved and less worried.\u00a0They can care for, feed, or groom the pet; walk the pet; and sit and hold the pet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gardening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gardening is a way to be part of nature. It also may help people remember past days and fun times.
