Your health and safety is so important because &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you get injured or ill, you miss work, you lose income, and you can leave clients without support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Strained backs and muscles create more risk of hurting clients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Clients often worry about you when you are hurt. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It\u2019s painful &#8211; and stressful &#8211; to be sick, or to have sprains, strains, and broken bones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Getting injured or ill affects all aspects of your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you are sick, you can infect clients and others.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/09\/FL168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"374\" class=\"wp-image-710 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/09\/FL168.jpg 432w, https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/09\/FL168-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some homecare workers may put their health and safety at risk because &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> They hurry &#8211; trying to do too much in too little time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> They don\u2019t want to let clients down and need their wages, so they work when hurt or sick.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> They haven\u2019t received training\u2014 or haven\u2019t been trained enough\u2014 to know how to maintain their health and safety. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0They put doing what clients want and need over their own health and safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Clients want them to do things that aren\u2019t safe or treat them in<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0ways that are stressful, and they haven\u2019t learned how to set healthy boundaries. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We at \u00a0<\/span><b>FirstLight Home Care of Tri-Valley, CA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are advocates of caregiver safety. \u00a0In line with this advocacy, we are sharing a series of \u00a0p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ractical tips for home care workers and their clients on how stay safe at home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. These tips are inspired by and reference free materials <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><b><i>Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others\u201d \u00a0<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">made available by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Disease Control\u2019s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The series of safety tips \u00a0are meant to help homecare workers do their work well and safely. These are also meant to help caregivers and their clients communicate concerns more effectively to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; Working with the client is the best way but it is not the only way to use these tips.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; You can use these on your own or with others such as family members or guardians.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; If you work for an agency you can also ask your supervisor for information or help. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a caregiver, can you relate to any of these?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/02\/mopping-scrubbing-house-cleaning-tasks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you mop, scrub, or do other housecleaning tasks for the client? <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/02\/working-cleaning-products\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you use cleaning products?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/03\/doing-laundry-for-the-client\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you do the client\u2019s laundry?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/04\/helping-client-move-transfer-place-place\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you help the client move (transfer) from one part of the house to another?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/05\/helping-client-take-bath-shower\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you help the client take a bath or shower? <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/06\/handling-needles-sharps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you use needles or other sharp objects such as razors or diabetes strips?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/08\/cooking-shopping-client\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you cook and shop for the client? <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/09\/preventing-trips-falls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are there conditions that could lead to trips and falls?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/09\/fire-electrical-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are there fire and electrical hazards in the home? <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/10\/dealing-stress-job\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you feel overloaded with stress and worry about your work? <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/11\/what-to-do-if-you-are-if-you-are-hurt-on-the-job\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">injuries, aches, and pains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">physical symptoms <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/11\/what-to-do-if-you-are-if-you-are-hurt-on-the-job\/\">that might be caused by your work?<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If so, you are likely exposed to some hazards and this series of tips are applicable to you.
