Here we \u00a0present \u00a0tips for effectively communicating your concerns to each other. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Plan the discussion. Practice with a friend or write down what you want to say. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Be respectful &#8211; make a request, not a demand. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Use \u201cI\u201d statements. I\u2019ll make sure you can still reach the phone easily.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Use \u201cI\u201d statements. Talk about what you observe and how it affects you rather than blame the other.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homecare worker: \u201cIf I tried that, I\u2019m afraid that I could hurt my back.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Client: \u201cI worry that if we change the way things are organized I won\u2019t be able to find<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the things I need.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Look at the issue from the other person\u2019s perspective.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homecare worker: \u201cIt must be hard having someone rearrange your things. But I wonder if we can move some things from the floor so we\u2019d have more room to walk.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Client: \u201cI\u2019ve always done the laundry that way, but if it puts too much strain on your back, it\u2019s OK with me to try it another way.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Consider several solutions so there\u2019s not just one option.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homecare worker: \u201cThat cleaning product is too strong for me. I\u2019m concerned about<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my health. I could continue using it if I can open the window or use a fan. Or I could<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">make a cleaner that works as well but is safer and less expensive. Which would you<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prefer?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Know your bottom line\u2014the least that you can accept while still protecting the health and safety of yourself or your client.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homecare worker: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m not comfortable changing the bandage without wearing gloves. Using gloves is safer for both of us.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Tips for working with clients who have speech difficulties<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find a quiet area and give them your full attention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t interrupt or finish their sentences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have trouble understanding, don\u2019t nod.
