<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gait belt <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">buckled around the client\u2019s waist is a simple, low-cost way to help with transfers and keep workers from straining their backs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">slide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">transfer board <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to help the client move between two locations\u2014such as a wheelchair and bed, or wheelchair and toilet. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hoyer lift<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is a portable device that helps you lift and transfer the client.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Handrails, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">grab bars, or vertical poles installed to help the client sit, rise, and stay upright.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shower chairs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that let the client bathe more safely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raised, lockable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">toilet seats with support arms <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to make bathroom visits easier and safer. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Tips<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use these safe-lifting practices:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t try anything you think might be unsafe. If needed, get help from another person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep the client close to your body while you are assisting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bend your knees\u2014not your back\u2014while moving him or her. Do not twist at the waist. Try to turn your whole body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have the client put his or her arms around your body, NOT your neck.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not pull with your arms or your back. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep your feet at least as wide apart as your shoulders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put one foot forward, the other back. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Talk it over<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You could say this: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHow are you usually moved? Tell me if there if there is anything special I should know. Can we work together to make it safe for my back?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/2017\/10\/02\/caregiver-client-talk-safety\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How Caregiver and Client Should Talk to Each Other About Safety<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for related tips for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">effectively communicating your concerns to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When the client uses a wheelchair<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Push<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, don\u2019t pull the wheelchair\u2014it\u2019s easier on your back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before helping with a transfer, remove or fold back the leg rests and make sure the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brakes on both sides are locked.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the wheelchair is motorized, make sure the chair\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">power is turned off <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before the transfer so it doesn\u2019t accidently move and lead to an injury. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re concerned that the client might fall<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have a plan <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in mind, including a number to call for help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the client starts to fall, minimize the possibility of injury to both of you by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">controlling the fall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014guiding the client slowly to the floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After making sure that the client is not injured, assist him or her to rise or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">get help <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to lift the client.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If there\u2019s ANY POSSIBILITY the client has been injured, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DO NOT MOVE HIM OR HER\u2014 <\/span><b>CALL 911.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/10\/Tip-3-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"476\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/10\/Tip-3-4.png 691w, https:\/\/www.firstlighthomecare.com\/home-healthcare-san-ramon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/10\/Tip-3-4-283x300.png 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Find help<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Equipment<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clients can ask their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">doctors <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">about<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">getting a wheelchair, walker, cane, or other device to help them move around. Doctors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can write prescriptions for these devices, sometimes called \u201cdurable medical equipment.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centers for Independent Living can also be helpful. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">community colleges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">provide Certified Nursing Assistant or homecare worker classes that cover lifting, transfers, and other procedures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the client bought equipment from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">medical equipment supply company, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the company can show you how to use it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you work for an agency, ask if they have training programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check with your union, if you have one, to see if they offer training classes. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To make good use of the above \u00a0tips, we encourage
