Our Executive Director & Co-Owner, Wendy Adlerstein, LSW, recently joined hosts Kelvin Brooks and Cheryl Warrick-Brooks as a guest on the “Gray With Benefits” podcast to reflect on her journey into home care and what she has learned from working with aging adults throughout her career. The conversation explored the realities of aging, the importance of family and community support, and how people can continue to find meaning and enjoyment at every stage of life.

How Wendy Found Her Calling in Elder Care

Wendy’s path into home care began while studying psychology as an undergraduate, when she chose to pursue a certificate in gerontology. During that time, she discovered how much she valued working with aging adults. She went on to spend 18 years at a nonprofit home care agency before partnering with Steve Stern to launch FirstLight Home Care of West Suburban Boston, which has now been serving families for more than a decade.

What Many People Don’t Realize About Aging

Through years of working with older adults, Wendy has seen that remaining present and connected depends on caring for both mind and body. She also knows that the earlier you build a habit, the easier it is to maintain with age. When encouraging loved ones to adopt healthy routines, approach matters, so Wendy recommends framing changes around what can add enjoyment and well-being, rather than focusing on limitations.

How Home Care Supports Independence

Wendy shared a helpful perspective on receiving support. Accepting care does not mean losing independence. When everyday tasks are supported by a caregiver, older adults can direct their energy toward the activities they enjoy and often remain at home longer.

Support, Planning, and Staying Connected

The episode also touched on the emotional side of aging and the value of strong support systems — and how practical tools can strengthen that support. Technology, when it’s used well, can help people stay connected and maintain independence, and early conversations about care preferences and finances can give families a clearer path forward when decisions need to be made. Wendy closed by emphasizing that while much about aging is outside our control, focusing on what we can influence — and staying present for what matters most — can make a meaningful difference.

Click here to listen to Wendy’s interview on the “Gray With Benefits” podcast.

What does it really mean to age well?
