How to Help Seniors Enjoy Winter in Tampa

While older people in most parts of the country huddle in for winter, Tampa comes alive with activity. Between warmer temperatures and a spectacular range of senior-oriented activities, Tampa is a great place for seniors to enjoy the winter.

However, colder-than-usual temperatures and shorter days can still lead to isolation for older adults, especially after the excitement of the holidays has passed.

Luckily, there’s plenty to do for seniors during the winter in Tampa to stay busy and engaged.

How Seniors Enjoy Winter in Tampa

If anything, Tampa has too much to offer seniors during the winter. If you’re looking for an activity for your loved one this winter, you might need to help them narrow it down.

Here are some of our favorite things for seniors to do during the winter in Tampa:

  1. Take Them For A Walk

In many parts of the country, snow, ice and cold weather can make it a lot harder for older people to step out for a walk or a social occasion. Not so in Tampa: With daily temperatures ranging from the mid-fifties to the low seventies, it’s often easier for seniors here to enjoy spending time outside during the winter.

In fact, quite a few seniors from around the country live in Tampa as snowbirds so they can enjoy Tampa’s “winter warmerland”—and there are a lot of good reasons for them to do so. You’ve probably heard that taking regular walks outside can help older people improve their heart health, balance and coordination, but the benefits of outdoor exercise go beyond the physical.

Exercise has a whole host of mental health benefits for seniors, especially when they do it outside. One study found that walking outside for just 10 to 30 minutes reduces depression and anxiety, and those benefits compound the more often you do it. Other research has found that spending time in nature can improve memory and creativity, and may also mitigate or delay dementia symptoms—and those benefits are greater in an enjoyable, comfortable climate.

That’s why one of the best things you can do for a loved one in Tampa is to help them get started walking daily. Find them an easy, paved walking route near their home and get them a good pair of walking shoes. When you can, try to come along with them as well—it’s a great way to connect.

  1. Make Sure Their Heater Works

While it rarely gets cold enough in Tampa to turn on the furnace, it’s always better to be ready for the day when it does. It wasn’t long ago that a sudden cold front brought us an unexpected snowstorm for the second year in a row.

That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure your loved one’s furnace is running smoothly by scheduling regular visits from a good HVAC service like Caldeco. Look for a company that offers an ongoing maintenance plan. Not only will they keep your loved one’s furnace in top condition, many of them also prioritize ongoing customers for any emergency repairs.

In Tampa, furnaces are like insurance policies: It’s better to have one and not need it than it is to need one and not have it. With proper furnace maintenance, you and your loved one will get the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ll be prepared for a surprise winter storm.

  1. Help Them Stay Engaged

Seniors in Tampa have no difficulty finding interesting activities—the difficulty is in choosing from the many options available.

With one of the largest senior populations in the country, it’s no surprise that Tampa is absolutely full of activities and community events of every type made just for older people. The city’s Parks and Recreation department maintains a diverse activity schedule, including workout classes, pickleball, dance, billiards and painting across its many rec centers.

Is your loved one looking for something completely new to do, or do they want to delve deeper into an interest? Try taking them to Sun City Center, which hosts a broad range of highly unique activities, clubs and outings, such as:

  • 22 sports and fitness clubs, including archery and swim dancing.
  • 17 arts and crafts clubs like Japanese bunka embroidery and a lapidary (gemcutting) club.
  • Nine game clubs including billiards, mahjong and bridge.
  • 14 separate dance and music clubs such as tap dancing and chorus.

Having so many options can be a little overwhelming, so it’s helpful to sit down with your loved one to help them decide. Consider starting with a list of three good options based on what you know about them and going from there.
