New Year, Same Us But Better

For many of us, New Year is a time for resolutions. This time of the year inspires us to reflect and figure out ways to improve.

A timely article in Forces Magazine “Read This Before You Make Your New Year’s Resolutions” by Shelcy V. Joseph suggests that it should not be about “New year, new me” but rather “New year, same me but better.” And so we say, “New year, same us but better.” The article also invites us to think about goal setting this way:
– Build on what you have already started.
– Check in regularly; and
– Focus on progress.

Our goal for 2018 is to help even more seniors and others needing care in the community, while continuing to work with great partners. As an area of focus, we will share reader-friendly information that we hope will be useful to family caregivers, our professional caregivers, and our referral partners.

The information we hope to share in the coming months will build on what we have started to provide, including the following:

  • Caring for Carers: Caregiver and Client Safety at Home, a series of tips which include: What to watch out for, and the tools and tips that can help both caregiver and client stay safe; a “talk it over” section with examples of what you could say, for more effective communication; and tips on where to find help.
  • 2018 Calendar of Health and Safety Observances for Older Adults, a compilation of observances throughout the year and the reference organizations. This can serve as a handy reference for those involved in senior care and who plan to organize or participate in activities aligned with national and international health and safety observances.
  • SHINES, a guide to events and observances for the safety, health, inspiration, and nurturing of our seniors in the Contra Costa and Alameda Counties.

We also intend to receive feedback and review our goals regularly as well as focus on and be encouraged by the progress we are making. Here, we are already making progress by writing and posting this short article!

Wish us good luck.
