6 Ways to Manage Family Caregiver Burnout in Carlsbad

Caring for an elderly family member is immensely meaningful, but it can also be a full-time job. Many family caregivers we know describe feeling stretched thin. In fact, two out of three family caregivers have trouble finding resources or support.

But in Carlsbad, resources for family caregivers are easy to find once you know where to look. North County has many resources to help you care for yourself, avoid family caregiver burnout and manage your loved one’s care.

How to Avoid Family Caregiver Burnout in Carlsbad

North County is full of resources and activities to help you manage stress, and many are discounted for seniors. Here are a few of our favorite ways for you—and your loved one—to unwind around Carlsbad.

  1. Catch Some Waves

California’s beaches are some of the best spots in the world to kick back and de-stress, and North County doesn’t disappoint. Moonlight Beach is best known for surfing, but it also has volleyball and tennis courts, fishing holes and trails. There are even fire pits already set up so you can have a classic beachside bonfire—which is how this beach got its name.

If you prefer your ocean a little calmer, head south to La Jolla Cove. The extraordinary beauty of this small beach makes it one of the most-photographed places in Southern California. Protected from the waves by sandstone cliffs, its calm waters are perfect for swimming and scuba diving. It even boasts several sea caves that you can tour by kayak.

And it’s easier than ever to bring your loved one along. The City of Carlsbad offers resources like transportation to help them enjoy the natural beauty of the region as well.

  1. Explore Oceanside

As the home of the first professional surfer, Phil Edwards, as well as many a famed board shaper, Oceanside is a cornerstone of surfing culture. Learn all about it at the California Surf Museum—or just walk down to the beach and see for yourself.

But Oceanside Beach isn’t just about world-class waves: It’s also a great place to swim, walk or cozy up with a beach read. Things heat up summer and autumn nights, when you can catch a concert at the waterfront amphitheater.

The real gem is Oceanside Pier, a wooden boardwalk that extends nearly half a mile over the Pacific. It’s the perfect spot to fish, sightsee or just go for a stroll with your loved one. Make sure to bring a jacket—it gets windy that far out from the shore

  1. Flex Your Creative Muscles

New research has shown that engaging in hobbies and creative pursuits is a good way to reduce stress and process emotions. Spending just a half hour a day can lift your mood and improve your resilience.

Luckily, Carlsbad happens to be home to many professional artists happy to teach their craft. Head on over to Barrio Glassworks for a lesson from one of their resident master glassblowers. Once you’ve learned the basics, they’ll even give you private lessons so you can advance your skills faster.

  1. Make Your Escape

When you’re stressed out, it can be hard to settle down. Like a car spinning its wheels, your mind may start to run in place. Yoga and meditation are fantastic ways to center yourself, but they’re not always enough. Sometimes, the best way to manage family caregiver burnout is to give your brain something else to chew on—the more engaging, the better.

Crossword and Sudoku puzzles are good, but the most engaging option we know is an escape room like Escapology. These timed rooms are full of tactile headscratchers that engage both sides of your brain. Bring your wits and a buddy or two, and you might escape before the clock runs out!

  1. Get Support From The Community

It might seem like a cliche, but talking about your struggles really can help—especially when you’re in a room full of people who understand what you’re going through. That’s why Oceanside native and former professional caregiver Kelly Allan founded the Caregiver Networks Club, a support group specifically for family caregivers in the area. With others to lean on, you won’t have to go it alone.

  1. Plan for the Future

It’s not just you: 70% of family caregivers say it’s stressful to coordinate care. One of the best ways to reduce your stress is to meet it head-on and build a plan for the future.

Luckily, there are a number of social workers, estate attorneys and Senior Care Managers in North County who can help. We recommend contacting Jessica Strick, a Registered Nurse who helps seniors and their families navigate every aspect of senior care. Let us know if you need help getting in touch—we’d be happy to refer you.
