FirstLight Home Care of Melbourne Launches New Compassionate Memory Care Program
Unique program addresses the need to provide one on one, person-centric care to those with cognitive decline.
FirstLight Home Care’s Compassionate Memory Care Program is designed to join the journey of
those living with dementia by adapting the overall approach to care. FirstLight’s care professionals
modify communications, tasks, and the environment to ensure those in their care have their best
day, every day.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are currently 7 million Americans living with
Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. About 1 in 9 people age
65 and older (10.9%) have Alzheimer’s. The burden on families and care providers is staggering –
over 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
“This unique approach is designed to find the ‘individual’ where they are in the dementia
continuum, engaging with them and fostering a sense of self-worth. We want to see our Dementia
clients thrive”. This training takes a skilled educator, and FirstLight is privileged to have one of our
own nurses who is also one of Florida’s few Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care
Trainers,” stated FirstLight Home Care’s Owner, Grayson Hausman.
FirstLight’s Compassionate Memory Care Program is based on five core principles:
- Create an environment that encourages the best ability to function
- Find the person in the client
- Encourage engagement and participation in meaningful activity
- Believe all people can communicate beyond words
- Focus on a person’s current abilities
Hausman states: “Caregivers need the right tools in their tool belt to get the job done correctly.
That’s why FirstLight caregivers receive comprehensive training to help them understand the
changes caused by dementia, as well as the abilities a client may have in each stage of this
disease. Our caregivers are trained to focus on person-centric activities that bring clients joy, help
them thrive, and help improve their overall quality of life. I see this Compassionate Memory Care
Program making a profound effect here in our community.”
