Stress Management for Family Caregivers in Alameda

Caring for a family member is rewarding, but it can also be a full-time job. We’ve talked to family caregivers who feel burnt out or stretched thin. In fact, 70% of family caregivers say care coordination is stressful.

Luckily, you don’t have to do it alone. Alameda and the surrounding areas have a wealth of resources to help you care for yourself while you care for your loved one.

How Family Caregivers Can Manage Stress in the Alameda Area

Alameda and the surrounding areas are full of stress management resources, many of which are free or discounted for seniors. Here are a few of our favorite local resources to help you—and your loved one—manage stress.

Try Some Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises are a great place to start for managing stress. They take only a few minutes, and you can do them anywhere.

One of the simplest exercises is 4-7-8 breathing, and it’s also one of the most effective. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Either lay down or sit up with a straight back.
  2. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four.
  3. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  4. Breathe out forcefully through your mouth for a count of eight. Try to make sure your exhalation is audible.
  5. Repeat 3-5 times.

If you’d like to take it further, try a meditation or exercise class that incorporates deep breathing at the Breathing Room. They host yoga classes of every style and level most days of the week, so you can stop in and de-stress at your convenience.

Get Outdoors

With sunny beaches, majestic redwoods and sweeping vistas all within an hour’s drive, Alameda and the surrounding areas have no shortage of natural wonders.

Just head across the bay to Mount Tamalpais State Park, where you can take in panoramic views of the entire Bay Area. With over 200 miles of walking trails to explore between Mount Tam and the adjoining Muir Woods National Monument, you’ll never run out of spots to explore. Or if you’re more about sun, sand and surf, head down to Pacifica State Beach, just south of San Francisco.

For an easy stroll, check out one of the many parks around the area. A stroll on the paved walking paths at Berkeley’s Tilden Park Hayward’s picturesque Japanese Gardens is the perfect way to spend an afternoon with your loved one.

Does your loved one need a walking buddy? Mastick Senior Center hosts a weekly Volunteer Walking Group for seniors. The group sets out from the Fruitvale BART Station every Monday morning to explore the Bay Area on foot. All you’ll need is a good pair of walking shoes and a box lunch.

Spark Creativity

Art therapy is quickly gaining support as a fun way to process emotions and mitigate stress. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can help to set aside a few hours for yourself and engage in your favorite creative pursuits or pick up a new hobby.

We love Color Me Mine, a pottery painting studio just off Alameda Beach. Spend an afternoon making something beautiful there, or bring your loved one or children for some family-friendly fun.

Spend Time With a Friend

Social time is critical to our mental health; those who spend 6+ hours per day socializing are 12 times more likely to report being happy than those who do not. Cafe Jolie is an award-winning brunch spot known for beignets. The relaxed French-inspired decor and comfortable seating makes it the perfect spot to settle in and catch up.

It’s also crucial to find support from others who understand what you’re going through. Emeryville’s J-Sei community center offers support groups on a variety of topics for both seniors and family caregivers. J-Sei is proud to help families strengthen inter-generational connections through traditional Japanese cultural values.
