Caregiver burnout is not a sign of weakness. It is the predictable result of sustained, high-intensity caregiving without adequate support — and it affects the majority of family members caring for a loved one with dementia.
Warning Signs of Caregiver Burnout
- Persistent exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest
- Increasing feelings of resentment, frustration, or hopelessness
- Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities you used to enjoy
- Neglecting your own medical appointments, nutrition, or sleep
- Feeling like caregiving has consumed your entire identity
Free Respite Care Through the Medicare GUIDE Program
The Medicare GUIDE program changes the cost equation entirely. If your loved one has Traditional Medicare and a dementia diagnosis, they may qualify for up to 72 hours of free annual respite care — provided by trained professional caregivers at no cost to your family. Hours reset every July 1st, and enrolling mid-year means you can access more than 72 hours in your first 12 months.
FirstLight Home Care of Alameda is an approved GUIDE program agency serving Alameda County and Contra Costa County. To check eligibility and begin enrollment, call us at (510) 954-3878 or visit our GUIDE program page.
