This past week, I sat down with my dad to film something deeply personal: a conversation about the emotional, complicated, and often overwhelming journey of finding care for his mother—my grandmother, whom I called Bubu.
When we first discussed making this video, we weren’t sure how it would go. Talking on camera about family, aging, and caregiving isn’t easy. But we knew the story could help others who are in that same uncertain place, trying to figure out what’s best for a parent they love, while juggling guilt, logistics, and all the unknowns.
In the video, my dad opens up about how he realized it was time to look for help—when the little signs of decline became harder to ignore. He shares what it was like to first notice the signs of dementia and how hard it was to make decisions that felt like they were taking away his mom’s independence, even though he knew it was for her safety and well-being.
We talk about the time it takes, the fears and most importantly, the emotional toll when finding care for a loved one. He discusses what helped him most: asking questions without shame and finding professionals who led with compassion and empathy.
For me, this wasn’t just a chance to capture my dad’s story—it was a way to connect. It helped me understand his experience not just as my father, but as a son who had to make tough choices for his own mom. And I saw, maybe for the first time, how much weight he carried through it all.
