Senior crafts keep creativity alive

Senior crafts keep people engaged and inspired.
Remember the joy of creating your first macaroni necklace? And what about all those coloring books you enjoyed when you were a kid? Or, maybe you were a musician and played piano or guitar. Maybe you felt the most alive when you were gardening or cooking. The point is that when we’re young, we’re encouraged to create. There are no rules or boundaries. And, we know that no matter what we do, our moms will hang our work on the fridge for everyone to see.
Problem is that as we move into adulthood, we tend to trade our spontaneity and creativity for responsibility. And, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We still have to buy groceries, make dinner and drive kids around. But, who says that being an adult means we can’t have fun and create our own projects? At FirstLight Home Care of Chardon and Northeast Ohio, we believe in the power of creativity. Every month or so, we invite our staff members to our home office on the Chardon Square to enjoy each other’s company and create new masterpieces. We share snacks, ideas and fellowship.
Senior crafts to try
No matter your age, there’s always a project that’s waiting to be discovered. Here are some popular senior crafts:
- Make door signs (great for grandparents to give to grandchildren away at school)

Crafting is always more fun with food!
- Knitting or crocheting
- Paint over jigsaw puzzle pieces and arrange into wreaths (good use for puzzles with missing pieces!)
- Flower arranging
- Paint on canvases
- Make book art out of discarded library books
- Make bird feeders
- Arrange cheese, crackers, grapes on serving platters for parties
- Paint pine cones and use in other projects
- Make homemade dog treats
- Decorate cutout cookies (can be bought pre-cut)
- Make holiday ornaments with grandparents and grandchildren

Have craft supplies on hand and organized, if you decide to host your own craft session.
