Improving Winter Wellness for Seniors in Columbus

After the excitement of the holidays dies down, winter often gets isolating for seniors. Shorter days making it difficult to drive at night, a fear of falling due to ice and stiffness due to low temperatures all make it harder to get out and connect with others.

To stay engaged and thriving during the winter, older adults often need a little extra help. Luckily, there are plenty of resources available that help to improve winter wellness for seniors in Columbus.

How to Help Seniors Find Peace of Mind in the Winter

The community here in Columbus more than makes up for the inclement weather with plenty of opportunities to improve winter wellness and help seniors enjoy the colder months. Here are a few of our favorites.

Give Them Reasons to Get Out and About

The holidays are exciting, filled with family visits and get-togethers. Once all the festivities are over, it’s easy for older adults to feel lonely and isolated.

The easiest way to fight the winter blues is ensuring your loved one has something to look forward to and plenty of social time. Taking them to SourcePoint’s Enrichment Center, or one of their events across the county, is a great start.

SourcePoint is open to all Delaware County residents over 55. In addition to group fitness classes that include yoga, Tai Chi and dancing, the Enrichment Center offers weekly arts and education classes on dozens of topics. Is your loved one a knitter? Have they always wanted to play the guitar? What about learning to speak Greek?

To top it all off, SourcePoint also organizes trips to see plays and musicals, museums and other exciting attractions. They specify in trip descriptions how much walking and standing will be required, so your loved one can feel confident they’ll be comfortable with any trip they choose.

Sit down together to choose a few activities they’d like to try over the next few months. If they keep a wall calendar, mark when those events are happening to build excitement.

Warm Up with a Cozy Treat

Many seniors end up isolated during the winter in large part because the freezing temperatures make it hard to face heading outside. You can make it easier for them by offering companionship and a fun treat that’ll help you both warm up.

Nothing feels better on a cold day than a steaming cup of your favorite tea, coffee or cocoa with a friend. While it’s easy to get stuck in the habit of making coffee at home, trying an interesting new coffee shop together can bring some fun and variety this winter.

Columbus is full of great traditional coffee shops, but if you’re open to trying a more unique café, check out Qahwah House. It’s owned by Ibrahim Alhasbani, who comes from eight generations of coffee farmers and loves to share his Yemeni culture and delicious brews with customers.

Help Them Feel Prepared

One of the best ways to improve winter wellness is to ensure your loved one feels not just safe, but confident as well. Having a conversation about emergency preparedness will ensure you both know what to do during a storm.

The Ohio Department of Aging offers a wealth of educational resources that teach you what to look out for during snow and ice, how to create an emergency kit, what to pack in a go bag and more. Local organizations, like the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, offer more education and can help connect you to more support.

Sit down with your loved one and create an emergency preparedness plan. Consider printing it out and placing it prominently, like on their fridge along with an In Case of Emergency info sheet like this one from the COAAA
