Your Medicine Cabinet – and Cutting the Clutter:

Medication Safety in the Home - Check Expiration Dates on Medications

Medication Safety in the Home – Hearthside Home Care Urges You to Check Expiration Dates

Senior in-home care clients and families in Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad  – fall is a great time to get your home ready for winter and make it safer to live in all at the same time. Clutter can be a nuisance for everyone but did you know that clutter is dangerous for your health?

So here are some tips our senior in-home care Greensboro and Piedmont Triad clients have shared over the years with us on keeping the home clutter-free and make it safer, too!

1. Use the Three Box Method – one box for Keeping, one for Giving (or for yard sale items), and one for Trash.

2. Only tackle one room at a time. Your kitchen will take more than one de-cluttering session. You know you don’t need three pastry cutters and four rolling pins!

3. While you’re de-cluttering – throw out those throw rugs. They are one of the worst tripping hazards. Make sure all your kitchen towels and curtains are kept away from open flames.

4. Don’t take on too much or you’ll get overwhelmed. One to two hours a day will make a huge difference.

5. Top to bottom and back to front are great methods for de-cluttering. Closets and cupboards should be first on your list except for your kitchen. Clear your counters and workspaces first. It will make it easier to work.

6. If you haven’t used it or worn it in the past 12 months – it needs to GO!

7. Stacks of newspapers and magazines should never be left on the floor where you might trip! Make sure everywhere you walk is free from cords and clutter.

8. While de-cluttering the bathroom, remember to check expiration dates on your medications. Take this opportunity to put non-skid decals in tub and shower.

Thanks to our senior in-home care Greensboro and Piedmont Triad clients and families for sharing these tips!
