Signs Older Parents May Need Help at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for family to gather and celebrate, but for some, it may also be a time to notice that older parents might need a little extra support. As the holiday approaches, keep an eye out for these signs that it’s time to offer help or step in:

Difficulty with Mobility
If your parents are struggling to get around, whether it’s walking, standing, or sitting for long periods, they may need assistance with tasks like setting the table, cooking, or even moving around the house.

Forgetfulness or Confusion
While it’s normal to forget small details now and then, if you notice your parents becoming more forgetful or confused, it could be a sign of cognitive decline. They might need help with menu planning, grocery shopping, or remembering important steps in recipes.

Changes in Appetite or Eating Habits
If your parents seem to have lost interest in food or aren’t eating well, it could be an indication of health issues or even depression. Offering to help with meal prep or even sitting down together to share a meal might boost their appetite and well-being.

Increased Fatigue
If your parents seem more tired than usual or are unable to keep up with the energy of preparing a holiday meal, it’s important to step in. They might need assistance with everything from cooking to cleaning up afterward.

Difficulty Handling Stress or Emotions
The holidays can bring emotional challenges, especially if your parents are dealing with loss or changes in their lives. If they seem overwhelmed or anxious, offering emotional support and lightening their workload can help alleviate some of that stress.

Health Issues
If you notice any signs of pain, illness, or medication side effects that they’re having trouble managing, it may be time to offer assistance. Whether it’s helping with medications, attending doctor’s appointments, or just keeping an eye on them, support is important.

Reluctance to Ask for Help
Older parents might hesitate to ask for assistance, wanting to maintain their independence. If they’re not asking but you notice them struggling, it’s a good idea to step in and offer help with tasks like preparing the meal, decorating, or cleaning up after the celebration.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to care for those who have cared for us. By offering help, you ensure that the holiday is a joyful experience for everyone.
