Coronavirus / COVID-19 House Cleaning & Sanitation Recommendations

House Cleaning & Sanitation Tips During The Coronavirus / COVID-19 Threat: Recommendations For Clients & Caregivers

The CDC (Centers For Disease Control) is considered the gold standard in terms of how to handle the Coronavirus threat.

Here is the CDC’s General Recommendations for Routine Cleaning and Disinfection of Households

Just how far you want to take things is up to you, but here are some of our recommendations for clients and caregivers:

In order to keep your house (and your clients’ houses) as free of Coronavirus / COVID-19 as possible, we recommend doing extra / more thorough cleaning/sanitation — especially of frequently touched surfaces such as:

  • throughout house: light switches, door & drawer handles/knobs
  • kitchens: refrigerator handle, dishwasher handle, sink area, countertop, drawer handles/knobs
  • bathrooms: sink area, toilet area
  • bedrooms: night stand, dresser handle
  • commonly used items: walker, wheelchair, remote control
  • cars: steering wheel, handles
Cleaning/Sanitation Supplies For Coronavirus / COVID-19

The CDC has a list of Virus-Cleaning Solutions — however, not all of them kill Human Coronavirus.

Therefore, we filtered the list to show only those that do kill Coronavirus.  Click to see the Coronavirus-killing cleaners in a Google Sheet or as a downloadable PDF File.

Below are the most common Coronavirus-killing cleaning supplies that everyone seems to want:

  • Clorox wipes
  • Lysol (the following can all kill Coronavirus / COVID-19
    • Lysol Neutra Air® 2 in 1
    • Lysol® Laundry Sanitizer
    • Lysol Brand Deodorizing Disinfectant Cleaner
    • Lysol® Brand All Purpose Cleaner
    • Lysol® Kitchen Pro Antibacterial Cleaner
  • Hand sanitizer
Alternative Sanitation & Cleaning Supplies For Coronavirus / COVID-19

With the popular sanitation and cleaning supplies being hard to get now, we’re listing some alternatives:

  • Rubbing / Isopropyl alcohol (at least 70% alcohol content) — you can apply some to a paper towel, then clean with the paper towel
  • Bleach (at least 1 minute to kill Coronavirus) — dilute and allow proper ventilation (5 tablespoons or 1/3 cup of bleach per gallon; or 4 teaspoons of bleach per quart)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (up to 10 minutes to kill Coronavirus) — be careful because it can bleach some surfaces (including hair)
  • Ammonia (up to 10 minutes to kill Coronavirus) — of course, it smells bad and you’ll need really good ventilation

Not all sanitation and cleaning supplies are appropriate for all surfaces, so be careful or you may damage property.

See CDC information on where each cleaning solution is appropriate — How To Clean And Disinfect.

Personal Hygiene For Coronavirus / COVID-17

Please maintain good personal hygiene.  By keeping yourself clean you can reduce the Coronavirus risk for yourself and others.

Read CDC guidance on Hand Hygiene (excerpted below):

  • Household members should clean hands often, including immediately after removing gloves and after contact with an ill person, by washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol may be used. However, if hands are visibly dirty, always wash hands with soap and water.
  • Household members should follow normal preventive actions while at work and home including recommended hand hygiene and avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Additional key times to clean hands include:
      • After blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing
      • After using the restroom
      • Before eating or preparing food
      • After contact with animals or pets
      • Before and after providing routine care for another person who needs assistance (e.g. a child)

Thanks and stay safe!
