Military veterans have served our country with pride and bravery and now it’s time for us to serve these heroes as they age—such as the Greatest Generation, who fought in World War II—or deal with injuries sustained in combat.

Veteran Home Care Services
No matter their age, veterans may receive home care assistance with activities of daily living. Whether managing the challenges of advanced age or disabling injuries that make it difficult to perform basic tasks around the home, a caregiver can help.
From assistance with bathing and dressing to cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and errands, a caregiver is there to make life easier. A home care aide can also help with transferring in or out of a wheelchair for those with mobility impairments, as well as getting veterans to and from medical appointments. As part of home care assistance for veterans—even if full-time help is not yet needed—there’s the option of respite care to fill in when veteran family caregivers need time away.
Veterans Aid and Attendance
Many veterans may be unaware that they can receive assistance paying for home care through the Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension, a benefit for older veterans and their surviving spouses. Aid & Attendance is available to eligible veterans and spouses who need assistance with bathing, eating, medication reminders and the like, even if these challenges are not a direct result of a service-related injury. To qualify, veterans must meet one of the following conditions:
- You require help from another person for everyday tasks like bathing, dressing and feeding.
- You are bedridden—or must spend a large portion of the day in bed—due to illness.
- You are a nursing home patient due to either physical or mental incapacity related to a disability.
- Your eyesight is limited to a visual acuity of 5/200 or less in both eyes (even with corrective lenses) or concentric contraction of your visual field to 5 degrees or less.
A veteran’s surviving spouse qualifies for benefits if they haven’t remarried, meets family income limits and the veteran was honorably discharged from a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces after completing 90 days of active duty military service with at least one day during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War or Persian Gulf War (even if not in combat). If the veteran entered active duty after Sept. 7, 1980, they must have served at least two years or the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty, although there are some exceptions to this rule. The spouse also qualifies if the veteran was an officer, starting active duty after Oct. 16, 1981, and didn’t previously serve on active duty for at least 24 months.
