FirstLight is About People

FirstLight believes in the mana (power) of people. We thrive on building relationships and helping people get the most out of life. When choosing a home care provider, we know your first priority is finding someone you can trust and rely on… someone who will care for your loved one as you would and as we would our own. We’ve been where you are, and this is one of the main reasons we chose to be in this business.

Honolulu FirstLight Professional Caregiver

Caregivers

We seek extraordinary caregivers who understand our work is not a job, but a calling.  With this mindset, motivation comes from the heart.

Our caregivers are the most significant members of our team in delivering our service commitment to others. By embracing each day with values of trust, honesty, respect, integrity, and dedication, we cultivate our relationships to the benefit of each caregiver.

Although many service businesses stress “clients first,” we are impassioned that our caregivers should be put first alongside our clients. When caregivers are well cared for, they, in turn, are inspired to provide exceptional care to our clients. It’s a win-win!

FirstLight is very selective in choosing professional caregivers. We look for reliable, attentive, experienced, considerate, and compassionate qualities to name just a few. From our initial screening process to our thorough orientation and in-depth, ongoing training, we are committed to continually empowering our caregivers with the support to deliver exceptional care.

JoAnn Wasson, Client Care Supervisor

JoAnn Wasson, Client Care Supervisor

Hi there! I’m JoAnn, and I’m excited to meet you. Caring for others and supporting families is my joy in life, and I’ve tried to be a loving helper wherever I go. My background is in family support, education, and elder care. My husband and I live in Kaneohe with our two teenage daughters and our little doggies, Spikey and Cocoa. I love swimming, cooking, traveling, gardening, and enjoying time with family and friends.

One of my dearest life experiences was being raised by my grandparents. They worked hard but knew how to enjoy life and taught me how to love others and understand the value of family and friendships. In our family, food is love, and I learned how to cook from my two Grandmas. This is a joy for me but not always great for the waistline! I’ve been in love with cooking and nurturing others all my life, so it’s a pleasure to work with our families, caregivers, and community partners at FirstLight Home Care.

It’s great to be part of an incredible ‘ohana of leaders and caregivers who are dedicated to serving and offering our very best to those we care for. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Jordan Topping, Human Resource Generalist

Jordan Topping, Human Resource Generalist

Hi everyone! My name is Jordan, and it’s great to meet you. I am a recent college graduate who was lucky enough to work part-time at FirstLight while completing my education at the University of Hawaii. My time working part-time provided me with a newfound appreciation for the Home Care industry, the people within it, and the positive impact it has on our community. It also showed me that relationships are one of the most vital aspects of providing high-quality care. This is why I am so excited to be taking on a role that allows me to directly cultivate a care team that will leave an unforgettable impression on those they meet.

Regarding my background, as aforementioned, I recently graduated from the University of Hawaii with degrees in Communication and Political Science. Some of my hobbies include going to the beach, playing basketball, video games, and spending time with my family and friends. If you see me out and about, there’s a 90% chance I am wearing an article of clothing that showcases a sports team logo. After all, watching sports like football and basketball has been a huge part of my life ever since I was a little kid. Besides that, I love enjoying good food and great company; you can never have enough of either of those things!

Nurse with dog

Kayoko Miura, RN, CHPN, Clinical Trainer

It was losing my mother when I was ten that impacted my career choice as a hospice nurse. While working as a new nurse, my mother-in-law came to live with us. We cared for her for eight years until she passed away at home. It was an extraordinary journey. With all my nurse training, I thought I was well equipped as a caregiver. Wrong! I didn’t know what to do and where to go each time an issue arose. Doctors and my nurse friends weren’t much help either. They were as clueless as I was. Though my mother-in-law was a super easy patient, I learned caregiving the hard way. That is why I feel passionate about being a support to professional and family caregivers.

No matter how you do it, caring for loved ones is not easy. You will be exhausted from sleepless nights, angry at times, and may feel guilty. It is all normal. Allow yourself to go through those emotions. Then, call us. We can figure things out together. No Guarantee to solve all problems, but we will be there, right by you. Let us walk through this journey together.

Now, I am a grandma of three. Yikes! When did this happen? I am training myself to become a sweet old lady. Fortunately, I have teachers all around me. Witnessing the wisdom of elders is the greatest reward of my job.

Owner wearing Lei

Lauri Topping, CDP, Administrator, Owner

Mother of two, wife of one, and friend to many. I started my career in accounting and realized serving and helping others was what makes me tick. I have a knack for anticipating people’s needs and organizing just about anything, which is why I am tasked with ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently at FirstLight. I am a Certified Dementia Practitioner who develops personalized, engaging care plans for clients with various forms of dementia.

Put me in the company of a first grader or let me talk story with kupuna and I’d call it a good day. I am least excited about cooking dinner but will stop anything to bake – I am always looking for a reason!

As you’d expect, I LOVE being with my family and friends, but I also enjoy time spent volunteering at Hawaiʻi Cat Foundation’s Sanctuary. And just as important to me is surfing dawn patrol and playing with my two cats, Kama and Koa.
