The Art of the Pruning

The room was filled with the scent of cut stems and damp earth this week as a group of seniors at Traditions of Deerfield in Loveland gathered around a sea of petals. Leading the charge was a veteran gardener with forty years of experience—someone who knows that a beautiful arrangement isn’t just about what you add, but what you’re brave enough to cut away.

Watching her work, it’s clear there is a science to the “mess.” You need your “star” flower to draw the eye, your “greens” for the background, and your “supporting” cast to fill the gaps. But sometimes, you have to step back, look at the whole picture, and realize it just isn’t working. So, you start over. You prune. You adjust.

The “Deep Breath” Moment

if you’re currently balancing a career, your own kids, and the changing needs of an aging parent, you know that caregiving often feels like that messy pile of discarded stems on the floor. We try to layer on more help, more appointments, and more “solutions,” but sometimes the most exhausted version of ourselves is the one trying to force a plan that just doesn’t fit anymore. It is incredibly hard to admit when a strategy—even one managed by people you truly respect—isn’t yielding the results you need. Radical honesty means acknowledging that “expert” advice doesn’t always equal the right fit for your specific family.

The Local Lens

There is a specific kind of peace found in the long drives across our corner of Ohio, like the hour-long trek on OH-22 & 3 out toward Sabina. It gives you “windshield time” to think. This week, that time was spent reflecting on our own “pruning.” We recently had to make the tough call to part ways with a paid agency. They were experts in their field, but the arrangement wasn’t serving the mission. Whether it’s a professional service that isn’t clicking or a home routine that has become a source of more stress than support, there is no shame in clearing the table to make room for something that actually works.

The Expert Pivot

We often think of caregiving as a checklist of tasks: transfers, meals, and housekeeping. But true care is about keeping the brain sharp and the spirit engaged. I saw this in action while calling Bingo at Provision Living in Batavia recently. If you think Bingo is just “five in a row,” you haven’t seen a room of seniors tackle a “postage stamp” or a “large picture frame” pattern.

The lesson? Variety is a cognitive necessity. Just as we use different Bingo patterns to keep the mind active, we have to be willing to change our approach to care. At FirstLight Home Care of Loveland, we even keep a library of games to bring into a client’s home because keeping the brain active is just as vital as any physical task.

The Reality Check

Caregiving is a lot like flower arranging: it’s beautiful in theory, but in practice, you’re usually covered in mysterious green water, someone is questioning your “artistic” choices, and you’re pretty sure you just stepped on a thorn.😆 But hey, at least we aren’t doing it alone—and if all else fails, there’s always the chance of winning a bottle of tequila at a local fundraiser.
