98% of people have room to improve how they look after their brain health. It’s no wonder most people could be doing more; brain health is complicated. There are 14 risk factors that, when addressed, can help seniors avoid or delay the onset or worsening of dementia.
Luckily for seniors in Silicon Valley, it’s easy to address those risk factors in our own community. We’re surrounded by resources that help with maintaining social connections, staying physically active and managing chronic conditions. It just takes a little help to make the most of them.
How Silicon Valley Seniors Maintain a Healthy Brain
Seniors in Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, Los Gatos, and our surrounding communities are spoiled for choice when it comes to ways to boost brain health. With beautiful green spaces, expert-led classes for older adults and community aging resources, there’s something to help every senior stay active and engaged.
Here are a few of our favorite resources for seniors in Silicon Valley:
Make Healthy Eating Easy
While it’s unclear whether one specific diet affects dementia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes are all risk factors. That makes maintaining a healthy diet top priority for anyone looking to delay cognitive decline.
That doesn’t mean healthy eating is easy. Eating healthy often requires planning and preparation, and, in many cases, it’s just less interesting. Making a healthy diet accessible and exciting is a great way to ensure your loved one is getting the nutrients they need.
We’re lucky to have the Saratoga Farmers’ Market nearby. Every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM, over 50 local vendors gather. You can even check out the Farmers’ Market website ahead of time to see which fresh fruits and vegetables are in season to plan an exciting seasonal menu for the week.
Be a Lifelong Learner
Continuing to learn as we age isn’t just a great way to get out of the house and beat boredom. It’s also key for building neuroplasticity and delaying or avoiding cognitive decline.
Silicon Valley seniors can find personal growth and enrichment through the West Valley College Older Adults Program. This program allows adults 55 and over of all skill levels to take continuing education for free, taught by subject matter experts.
Whether they’re looking to improve their balance and fitness or discover a new passion for music, these classes are a great resource for any senior looking to learn or improve on a new skill.
Stay Socially Active
Social isolation is one of the risk factors for dementia, meaning socialization isn’t just fun—it’s necessary for building brain health.
Staying social is easy for Silicon Valley seniors, especially with the help of the Saratoga Senior Center and their wide variety of senior programming.
Check in for weekly social groups and fitness classes on everything from tai chi to dancing, led by certified instructors. There are also a variety of classes covering topics like meditation, memoir writing and the stock market. Is your loved one a gamer? They can play dominoes, card games, chess and more at Open Game Day on Fridays.
Spend Time Outdoors
Physical exercise isn’t just important for brain health; it can also impact your sleep and even prevent certain types of cancer. In Silicon Valley, getting exercise isn’t just easy; thanks to the diverse natural landscape surrounding us, it’s also beautiful.
Try taking your loved one to the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. This preserve features nine miles of trails through diverse landscapes with sweeping views of the Santa Clara Valley. If you arrive earlier in the evening, you’ll also be treated to a stunning sunset. Just make sure to head over early, as the parking lot can fill up quickly.
If your loved one is a birder, bring some binoculars and keep an eye out for hawks and golden eagles!
