How to Show Appreciation for Caregivers in Silicon Valley

Caregivers are truly unsung heroes. Without expecting any recognition, they show up to care for seniors with warmth, compassion and a tireless work ethic. They replace isolation, sadness and frustration with companionship, joy and ease. Their quiet, steady efforts might not be flashy, but they can dramatically improve older adults’ quality of life.

While they don’t do what they do for recognition, they certainly deserve it—and we like to take the time to celebrate the tireless dedication and kindness of the caregivers in Silicon Valley.

If a family or professional caregiver has made daily living easier for a senior you know, you might be looking for a way to thank them. Here are a few local resources to help you do it.

Outstanding Caregivers in Silicon Valley

Most professional caregivers we’ve met choose their career out of a genuine desire to improve the lives of seniors in their community. For them, going above and beyond is all in a day’s work. But for their clients, that extra effort can mean the difference between a tolerable life and a good one.

What does that look like in practice? Just ask Dee, a client of ours who was homebound before finding help from a caregiver. A new disability meant Dee couldn’t drive, and for almost two years, she only left the house when her family came to visit from out of town.

Dee’s family knew she needed help getting out of the house when they weren’t in town, so they reached out to us looking for a caregiver. After a brief consultation last spring, we suggested our caregiver Maria. The match was a greater success than we had imagined.

That’s because Maria practices companion care—a form of aid where the caregiver acts as a trusted companion and friend as well as an assistant for daily living. Maria doesn’t just bring Dee in for doctor’s appointments and help with essentials like grooming and eating; she also takes Dee out for pedicures and other fun activities that add joy to Maria’s daily life. They even went to see the new Downton Abbey movie together.

In the six months since she started with Maria, Dee’s mental health and outlook on life have improved immensely. Who knows how much better her life will get by next spring?

Want to Thank a Caregiver You Know?

At FirstLight Home Care of Silicon Valley, we use team events and an online platform to reward and recognize outstanding caregivers. That works well for us, but what if you want to recognize a caregiver you know personally?

Heartfelt appreciation or a beautiful card will always be welcome, but if you want to go further, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area have a huge number of options to help. Here are a few of our favorites.

Treat Them to Brunch at Jack’s

There’s something about a good brunch that warms up the rest of your day, and one of the best options in the area is Jack’s. This American restaurant with Greek roots has the best comfort food in town. It’s the kind of place where the menu holds no surprises—every dish just happens to be better than you expect.

With five convenient locations around the Bay, Jack’s is never too far away, making a gift card for a meal at Jack’s perfect for a busy caregiver.

Gift Them a Spa Day

Caregiving isn’t easy work, and caregivers also need care to recover properly. That’s why one of the best ways to show your appreciation is to give them the gift of relaxation at Burke Williams day spa.

Massage treatments are a great way to help anyone relax and recuperate, but they’re especially helpful for people who work with their hands because they can help prevent injury. The trained massage therapists at Burke Williams offer a wide variety of massage treatments, from gentle and relaxing to intense and restorative. They also offer combined treatments that blend massage with other relaxing sensations like harmonic sounds, heat and comforting aromas.

If massage isn’t their thing, Burke Williams also offers treatments like intensive skin care for the face and body or unique hydrotherapy experiences. They even keep a chiropractor on staff—perfect for a hardworking caregiver who you’ve seen bending over one too many times.
