People often ask us why we decided to start a home care agency. The truth is, it wasn’t our plan at all. But it grew out of our personal experiences, shaped by the challenges we witnessed and sense of purpose.
Searching for meaning
Ruth and I both worked for many years in the medical device industry. We loved it because we were part of a field that brought solutions to people. However, as we progressed in our careers, we noticed that our roles pulled us further away from people and more towards bureaucracy and endless meetings leaving us stressed, frustrated and drained. We had a chance to take a break and started having honest conversations about our lives, our future, and what truly mattered to us. We talked about wanting to wake up and know we were making a difference and wanting our work to feel meaningful, not just busy.
We were connected with Tana Hutchinson, a national franchise consultant, to explore options as we figured out our next steps. We came across the FirstLight Home Care franchise, and as we learned more about home care, we realized it was something we had been doing for our friends and family all along. We started thinking of the possibility that we could also make it the thing that we devoted everyday to doing with greater and greater impact.
Turning our experiences into a new adventure
We have been helping friends and family navigate appointments, checking in on them and helping them with regular household tasks while keeping them company. This reminded us of everything we were missing in our daily work: human connection, service and purpose, each of which were foundational to home care.
This opened our eyes to see that we needed a change. We realized that we wanted to do work that brought value to others lives and to our community in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and beyond, rather than spending our lives on the endless rat race of trying to get ahead and seeking the next big thing. As scary as it was and though we weren’t ready for this change, we jumped into it with faith and hope.
Home care brought everything together. It allowed us to return to people, build something rooted in empathy, and to create a service that families could trust. It allowed us to use our strengths and experiences while learning new ones. We got to honor the experiences we lived through with our own families and friends in a way to help others by putting care and relationships into the forefront. And that is how FirstLight Home Care of Sunnyvale started.
Building a business from the heart
Our goals were simple. We want to create a home care experience that is personal, and thoughtful. We want to help families get the help that they need, whether directly through us or by us providing information, referrals, or advice on next steps. We want families to feel supported and understood. We want clients to be treated with dignity and utmost care. We also want to care for caregivers and treat them with respect and value. We want to empower our caregivers to care for our clients by building relationships and by giving joy to our clients.
Our business is shaped by providing the kind of care we wish to have for our own family. That means treating every person with dignity. It means building relationships, not simply completing tasks. It means becoming someone families can trust during their most vulnerable moments. It also means supporting our caregivers so they feel valued, appreciated, and supported. We do not see our clients as cases. We see them as individuals carrying a lifetime of stories, cherished routines, and families who love them. Their homes are personal and sacred places, and stepping into them is a privilege we never take lightly.
Coming home to purpose and care
Starting this in home care agency has been one of the hardest but most fulfilling decisions we ever made. It brought us back to people and it brought us back to connections. We found purpose in our home care agency. We found a way to make a real difference in the lives of families who need support, understanding, and compassion. This is why we do what we do. This is why our business exists, and this is why we are grateful every single day to be on this path. This is more than a career for us. It’s a calling. It grew from our own lived experiences, moments that shaped us, and ultimately inspired us to build something better for others. Through FirstLight Home Care of Sunnyvale, we hope to offer comfort, connection, and care that feels like home to families in Mountain view, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and Milpitas. This is our heart and we are grateful to share it with you.
