Understanding the difference between Home Health Care vs. Home Care

When families start looking for support at home, it’s common to feel confused by the terms like “Home Care” and “Home Health Care.” They sound very similar, but they serve two different purposes.

Home Health Care: Skilled Medical Support

Home health care is usually time-limited and prescribed by a doctor for a specific recovery or medical need, ending once those goals are met. It is provided by licensed medical professionals like nurses, therapists, or other clinicians. Home health care is often used for people recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions, or needing specialized medical support. This can include physical or occupational therapy, post surgery or post-hospital recovery support, wound care, and monitoring chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Home health care is about healing, managing health, and preventing complications while a patient is back at home.

Home Care: Support for Everyday Life

In contrast, Home Care is focused on non-medical support. We help people life comfortably, safely and independently day to day. Our caregivers help with daily routines, provide companionship and offer a steady, caring presence. Some ways home care can help include:

  • Bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Preparing meals and light housekeeping
  • Transportation to errands, and doctors appointments
  • Medication reminders (please note Home care agencies do not handle medication as we are non-medical).

Home Care is personal. No two people are alike so a home care agency will build a care plan built around each individual’s needs, routines and preferences. Some people need a few hours a week, others require support every day, and some may need 24/7 assistance. Home care also evolves with the person’s needs, so hours and services can be adjusted as circumstances change.

Why It Matters

Understanding the difference between the two matters because each type of support has a unique role and helps families make informed choices.

  • Home health Care addresses medical needs and recovery at home
  • Home Care provides non-medical personal support, companionship, and help with daily life.

Some people may have a combination of both which creates a full-circle approach that supports health and quality of life.
