Heatwave: Keeping Seniors Cool

temperature-conversion_2Because we are in the middle of summer and the temperature is rising, this could be deadly for the elderly in our local communities. We did some homework and found some pretty simple tips to help keep everyone in your family cool this summer:

  1. Stay hydrated: Drink cool drinks, preferably water.
  2. Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, which is typically 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  3. To keep your rooms cool, close your blinds. Only open windows when it’s cool enough to do so.
  4. Head downstairs. Hot air rises. A lower floor or basement can be a cool refuge from the midday heat.
  5. Spend the day where there is air conditioning. Stop by a local library, community center, or shopping center where it is cooler.
  6. Eliminate extra sources of heat. Incandescent light bulbs can generate unnecessary heat, and so can computers and appliances. Turn them off in you don’t need them.
  7.  Place a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan to generate cooler air. Remember to be careful when placing anything near electrical and/or on the floor so that you or others don’t trip and get hurt.
