Meet one of our Extraordinary Caregivers: Barbara B.

This is the first in a series of interview-style profiles of the hard-working and compassionate Caregivers on the FirstLight Home Care of West Suburban Boston and Boston-Back Bay Caregiver Team.

How long have you been with FirstLight Home Care?

I have been with FirstLight of West Suburban Boston for three and a half years and prior to that, I worked with the Pasedena, CA office for four years.

Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

My mother’s love for people inspired me to care for others. Beginning with when I was back home in Uganda, she told me I have a heart for people. I used to love caring for the young children and youth. My mother told me that I have love for the people around me, anytime I saw someone in need I would be drawn to help them. Back in Uganda I also cared for the homeless and continued to do so when I got to the states, originally in CA and now continuing the work in MA in Boston and Lowell. In my own time, I organize a group of people that provide essentials like toothbrushes, clothes, and food to those in need. We gather and do this a few times a year, especially during the colder season.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

Many people think I am a serious person and that I am all about work and ministry. However, when people get to know me they find out that I crack jokes, like to dance, go to the beach and have fun. I love being around people and making them laugh.

What do you like most about what you do at FirstLight Home Care?

I have been able to learn a lot through my career at FirstLight by working with many different clients. I gained a lot of patience and learned to not take things personally especially when working with clients with memory care challenges. I love that this job gives me the opportunity to take care of the elderly as if they were my own grandmother or grandfather. Sometimes it is hard but I love putting a smile on people’s faces and giving them hope.
