Frequently Asked Questions
About In-Home Senior Care Services
How do I know when it’s time to find home care for my loved one?
It can be difficult to know when the time is right for home care. If your loved one is forgetting to take their medications, unable to prepare nutritious meals, having difficulty with mobility or needs assistance with bathing and toileting, senior care services can provide much-needed assistance for them and peace of mind for you. Home care also provides support for those with Alzheimer’s, Lewy body dementia and other memory care disorders.
How do I talk with my loved one about home care?
Sometimes older adults don’t want to admit that they need assistance. Asking for help is often associated with a loss of independence. Therefore, it is best to have these conversations with your loved one before any issues arise and ideally when they are still independent, active and in good health. Allowing a “stranger” into the home to provide care can also be an obstacle. That is why FirstLight is committed to finding the best caregiver for your loved one. We take the time to get to know our caregivers and clients so that we can identify an ideal match everyone is comfortable with.
What are the advantages of care at home versus care in a senior living community?
In a word: freedom. According to AARP, more than 90 percent of people over the age of 65 want to stay in their homes as long as possible. Why? Because they enjoy their independence. In-home care can be an alternative to a nursing home or other senior living community. Our elderly care services allow seniors to stay active longer, maintain their own schedules and remain in a familiar environment.
What is the difference between home care and home health care?
Although there are many differences, both home care and home healthcare have the same goal: to keep your loved ones safe and as healthy as possible. They often work in tandem. For example, a home healthcare nurse or physician’s assistant may visit the home and potentially adjust prescriptions, while a non-medical caregiver makes sure these medications are taken on time. Home care fills the gap between people needing medically skilled services and people who need non-medical companionship and help around the house.
How do I know how much care is needed?
Is your loved one fairly active and mobile, or do they need someone to assist them during the day? A personalized care plan can be built based on the unique needs of your situation and the amount of time you need a caregiver per day. FirstLight provides short-term or long-term elderly care services, from a few hours a day to 24/7 care. We also provide respite care for family caregivers who need some well-deserved time to themselves.
How do I pay for home care?
The most common way to pay for non-medical home care is private pay. But certain home care services may be covered by long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, public programs such as Medicaid, and some Medicare Advantage plans.
